At least thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in public projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a full safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
