European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
