Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
